Our
Membership
As
a member of the Association of Christian Schools
International (ACSI) we have partnered with over 5,300
other schools in approximately 100 countries with an enrollment
of nearly 1.2 million students.
This cooperative fellowship strives
to equip Christian educators and schools worldwide to
effectively educate children and young people with the
mind of Christ. Thus, students will be prepared for life
because Christ, the creator and sustainer of the universe, possesses
“all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians
2:3). The life and mind of Christ is nurtured in the lives of
students through redemptive relationships with faculty who recognize
that reconciling the heart and mind to God is the foundation of
their work.
Our Approach to
Discipline
Graceland views the
discipline of small children as remediation and not punishment.
Discipline involves training in righteousness, with the goal of
godliness (1 Timothy 4:7). The responsibility for discipline rests
primarily with the parents. Graceland only assists
the parents as they fulfill their God-given obligation. Throughout a
child's
development, he or she will inevitably behave in ways that are not
acceptable, either because they are dangerous, hurtful, or otherwise
socially unacceptable. In order to help our children develop
appropriate social behaviors, we guide them toward good behavior by
the most positive means available. Graceland utilizes:
(1)
Redirection—By keeping the children involved in activities
that they are interested in, we can often prevent situations from
arising that require further intervention. In addition, by ensuring
that the children are adequately supervised, situations can be
dissipated before they escalate.
(2)
Separation
and Information—Unacceptable behavior sometimes occurs. When it
does, the adult's action must
be appropriate to the age of the child. The most common behaviors
requiring intervention are hitting and pushing. When this occurs,
the teacher non-violently stops the child from inflicting harm to
others. For example, if one child is hitting another, the teacher
may pick up the child being hit, make sure they are all right, and
remove them from the reach of the child who hit them. This is often
preferable to removing the child who is hitting, because it does not
reinforce the negative behavior with special attention. In a firm
manner, the teacher will tell the child who hit, that what they did
is not acceptable. The teacher should refrain from judging the child
(i.e. do not ever tell a child that he or she is bad - only that
their behavior is not allowed). If the teacher can determine what
brought about the hitting, he or she may suggest an alternative
behavior that would have been acceptable (use their words to tell
other children to stop their offending behavior instead of hitting
them; take turns or share). As soon as the incident is over, all is
quickly forgiven.
(3)
Time-outs—Only rarely will formal time-outs and removal of
privileges be used as disciplinary tools.
(4)
Graceland does
not permit the use of corporal punishment.
(5)
Graceland does
not permit the use of verbal abuse (including
yelling/screaming).
(6)
Graceland does
not permit the use of food as punishment (or reward).
(7)
Parental
involvement. Graceland believes
that the key to any long-term improvement in a
child's behavior is
for the parents to be informed of problems and to participate in
finding solutions. Informally (when the child is picked up) and
formally (at meetings), Graceland staff will
communicate to the parents about how their children are
developing .
Our Educational
Philosophy
1.
The priority, among all other educational goals, is to
develop godly Christ-like character. When students excel in
spiritual growth, they will automatically excel in academic growth
(Phil. 1:6, 9-11).
2.
Practicing the Christian character traits, as given in the
Bible, produces a good self-image and a feeling of self-worth (Psalm
139:14).
3.
A good self-image and a feeling of self worth come about when
a student practices the Christian character traits as given in the
Bible (Psalm 139:14).
4.
Provision for the student’s spiritual, mental, physical, and
social growth are integrated into the curriculum (Proverbs
22:6).
5.
Teachers must be rooted and grounded in sound Biblical
principles so they can be living examples and models of the
spiritual qualities taught in the scriptures (1 Timothy 4:6- 8).
6.
Maximum growth in students occurs when teachers present a
stimulating environment coupled with a warm accepting attitude.
7.
Students do not respond equally to any one method of teaching
because they are unique in their gifts, talents, and potentials.
Therefore, in order to apply the most effective method of teaching,
teachers must be skilled in using a combination of methods.
8.
The natural method by which a child develops their language
patterns (which precedes reading ability) is a method designed by
God. By following this method, the teacher will be successful in
teaching phonics, beginning reading skills and comprehension.
9.
Parents have the God-given responsibility for the education
of their children. Therefore, the school will support the family
role by encouraging family participation in school activities (Deut.
6:6, 7; Eph. 6:4).
